Fortescue Limited has awarded GenusPlus Group three major contracts worth $60 million to support its decarbonisation strategy across sites in Western Australia.

The projects form part of Fortescue’s Climate Transition Plan, which aims to achieve real zero emissions by 2030. The plan targets all operations, including mining, rail, port, and non-process infrastructure across the Pilbara.

Power Transmission and Distribution Works at Key Mining Sites

The first contract covers the construction of 220-kilovolt transmission lines at Fortescue’s Christmas Creek mine. Genus will also design and build approximately 30 kilometres of overhead power distribution infrastructure, a critical component in delivering renewable power across Fortescue’s operations. A third contract includes the installation of fast-charging and pit power facilities at Eliwana and Flying Fish mine sites, supporting Fortescue’s transition to electrified mining fleets.

Supporting Fortescue’s Real Zero Ambition

Genus managing director David Riches said that the company is “very pleased” to have been awarded the additional contracts.

“Genus continues to support Fortescue with its decarbonisation initiatives in Western Australia, and it is committed to strengthening its longstanding and successful partnership with the company as Fortescue advances toward decarbonisation goals,” Riches said.

Genus will also construct a 220-kilovolt transmission line at Fortescue’s Solomon mine. The 33-kilovolt power distribution system will include 300 poles, an overhead conductor line, and all related hardware.

What is Fortescue’s Climate Transition Plan?

Fortescue’s Climate Transition Plan, released this year, outlines a ‘real zero’ emissions strategy, aiming to eliminate fossil fuels entirely. Unlike net zero approaches that rely on offsets or carbon capture, this initiative focuses on full decarbonisation of operations.

The company’s target is to reach real zero emissions by 2030 across mining operations, port logistics, mobile fleets, and infrastructure in the Pilbara. Genus has confirmed its ongoing commitment to helping Fortescue achieve this goal through advanced renewable energy infrastructure and grid electrification.

What is the Project Timeline and Estimated Workforce?

Genus said that peak onsite workforce will reach around 80 personnel during the construction phase. Site access will begin in October 2025, with all three contracts expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026.

This project marks another milestone in the Western Australian mining sector’s transition to clean energy, reinforcing Fortescue’s leadership in sustainable mining and GenusPlus Group’s growing reputation for renewable infrastructure delivery.
