Safety Topic: Safe Vehicle Operation on Site – Preventing Incidents Before They Happen

Vehicle movement is one of the highest-risk activities on-site, especially in dynamic mining and FIFO work environments. Incidents occur at both high and low speeds but are entirely avoidable with good habits and awareness.

Reversing, loading, unloading, and pedestrian movement are the activities most frequently linked to workplace vehicle accidents.

Here’s how we can all contribute to a safer worksite:

As highlighted by WorkSafe WA, key hazards to watch out for include:

• Reversing collisions due to poor visibility or lack of a spotter
• Poor segregation of pedestrians and vehicles
• Obstructed walkways and blind spots near structures and equipment
• Lack of communication between drivers and ground workers

Safe work practices include:

• Pre-start checks are essential – inspect tyres, lights, brakes, and alarms before driving
• Stick to traffic management plans – follow speed limits, signage, and designated vehicle routes
• Always wear seatbelts and never use phones unless hands-free and permitted
• Use a spotter when reversing or when visibility is limited
• Watch for pedestrians – give way at crossings and maintain a 360° clear view around your vehicle

Pedestrian Safety:

• Walk in marked walkways only
• Avoid blind spots – if you can’t see the driver, they can’t see you
• Be aware of your surroundings at all times
