Autumn Readiness: Weather, Gear & Worksite Awareness

As we head into autumn, the weather across WA’s mining regions can change rapidly — cooler mornings, more rain, slippery surfaces, and unpredictable conditions. These changes bring new risks to sites, and preparation and awareness will help prevent injuries while keeping everyone safe and productive!

1. Dress for the Conditions

  • Layered clothing helps regulate body temperature, especially when starting work in cool mornings that warm up later in the day.
  • Waterproof gear is essential during rain — staying dry means staying warm and alert.
  • Inspect PPE (jackets, gloves, boots) for wear and tear. Replace items as needed to ensure protection and warmth.

2. Slips, Trips & Falls

  • Watch for slippery surfaces — muddy walkways, wet steps, and metal platforms can become hazards quickly after rain.
  • Report and mark hazards. If you spot a puddle, mud patch, or slippery ramp, don’t walk past it — raise it with your Supervisor and/or the Safety Team immediately, or mark it temporarily.
  • Use handrails and take your time — rushing in wet areas is a recipe for injury.

3. Machinery and Equipment Awareness

  • Check tyres and brakes — vehicles and machinery must be extra responsive in wet or loose surface conditions.
  • Test lighting and wipers — visibility can drop suddenly in overcast or rainy conditions.
  • Slow down operations if the weather deteriorates — safety always comes before production.

4. Visibility Matters

  • Cloud cover and shorter daylight hours can reduce visibility.
  • Wear clean, high-vis gear at all times.
  • Ensure worksite lighting is functional, especially during early morning and twilight hours.

5. Keep Yourself in Check

  • Wet and cold conditions can lead to discomfort, fatigue, or distraction.
  • Stay dry, fuelled, and hydrated — dehydration still happens in cool weather!
  • If you’re feeling off or chilled, speak up early — prevention is key.

Toolbox Talk Tips:

  • Share a recent site example of a weather-related near-miss or incident.
  • Do a quick PPE check-in with your team: rain gear, boots, gloves, hi-vis.
  • Walk the site and flag any high-risk slip zones.
