Komatsu Australia’s second annual Industry Supplier Forum, held in November, was a resounding success.

The event brought together 15 senior executives from across Komatsu’s supply chain, creating a platform to exchange ideas, challenge perspectives, and collaborate on critical issues impacting not just their organisations but also their people and the broader industry.

The forum focused on three pressing topics: environmental and social governance (ESG), safety, and generational diversity.

Spotlight on ESG and Safety

“We know these topics are top of the agenda for many businesses and felt it was important we heard from those in our supply chain we deal with every day to connect, learn and collaborate together,” Komatsu Australia supply chain executive general manager Russell Hodson explained.

A key discussion revolved around preparing for upcoming ESG reporting requirements, with a focus on Scope 3 emissions.

“Particularly of interest was how we all need to be prepared for the upcoming ESG reporting requirements as we look towards 2026, particularly around Scope 3 and what it means for not only Komatsu but our supply chain partners,” Hodson added.

Komatsu also shared exciting updates on its progress towards ISO45001 accreditation, expected to be completed in the first half of 2025.

“This will mean we will be accredited and recognised globally for our commitment to occupational health and safety in the workplace and reducing safety hazards, while promoting a safe workforce,” he said.

Learning and Collaboration

Attendees gained valuable insights as they discussed the challenges of ESG reporting, including data collection and analysis. Hodson noted,

“We also shared learnings as we all plan for mandatory ESG reporting requirements – how we’re collecting and analysing data, and what challenges we’re facing – which was very beneficial to see where we each stand.”

Fostering Inclusion and Diversity

Diversity and inclusion were also key topics. Komatsu shared its ongoing efforts in intergenerational diversity and its role in the Champions of Change coalition. Hodson highlighted the recent launch of the FOCUSED on Everyday Respect resource, stating,

“Along with our own focus on intergenerational diversity, we also shared more on Komatsu’s role in the Champions of Change coalition and the recent launch of the FOCUSED on Everyday Respect resource, which equips to help identify and prevent everyday disrespect while fostering inclusive, safe, and productive environments in the workplace.”

Global Recognition for Supply Chain Excellence

Komatsu recently earned a top-three spot in Gartner’s Supply Chain rankings for the Asia Pacific region. This annual recognition celebrates advancements in supply chain capabilities.

“We know that a great product deserves a great supply chain, and our supply chain has been able to support our business through some really challenging times and growth.”

He also credited Komatsu’s corporate culture for this success, adding, “We were also acknowledged by Gartner for our corporate culture, where our people exercise autonomy in identifying issues, implementing necessary improvements and innovating through teamwork.”

Through initiatives like the Industry Supplier Forum, Komatsu continues to strengthen its commitment to collaboration, innovation, and excellence across its supply chain and beyond.
