Envirostream to recycle batteries from Woolooga.

Hithium Teams Up with Envirostream for Exclusive Battery Recycling Partnership

Both parties have entered into a landmark agreement to handle the recycling of lithium-ion batteries.

Effective from January 1, the partnership spans an initial three years. It has an option to extend for a further two years.

Under the agreement, Envirostream’s parent company, Livium, will recycle batteries supplied by Hithium that are used at Lightsource bp’s Woolooga solar farm in Queensland.

Livium will provide a range of services, including the discharge, dismantling, and processing of Hithium’s batteries. The agreement also covers additional support such as

  • Transportation
  • Condition assessments, and;
  • Customised services, with Livium receiving fees for these operations.

Simon Linge, Livium’s Managing Director and CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, calling it a pivotal moment for the company as it supports renewable energy projects in Australia while broadening its access to recyclable lithium-ion batteries.

“This collaboration with Hithium highlights our ability to align with leading global manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries,” Linge remarked. “The Woolooga project showcases the scale of renewable energy initiatives taking place across the country, and we see potential for our recycling services to be applied to similar ventures. We’re grateful for Hithium’s trust and look forward to delivering exceptional support.”

Hithium’s contribution to the Woolooga solar farm includes 128 units of five-megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) containers, built around its advanced prismatic 314 ampere-hour cells.

Mizhi Zhang, Hithium’s President of Global Business, emphasised the significance of this partnership for their sustainability goals.

“The Woolooga project is a major milestone for Hithium in laying the groundwork for future energy storage projects in Australia,” Zhang explained. “Ensuring environmentally responsible disposal of our BESS products is crucial, and Livium’s proven expertise in safe battery recycling makes them an ideal partner.”

Envirostream has secured a number of exclusive recycling agreements throughout 2024, partnering with organisations such as Infinitev, Hyundai Glovis, LG Energy Solution, Volvo Group Australia, and Industrea Mining Equipment.
