ABB Launches AI Tool to Support Gearless Drives

ABB has released a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool called the GMD Copilot. It’s designed to improve how gearless mill drives (GMDs) are operated and maintained.

Instant Support for Smarter Decisions

The GMD Copilot gives users instant, context-specific information. It offers a full view of the system to support better decisions.

Users can easily access key details about how their GMD is performing and what maintenance it may need.

Helping Meet Green Goals

GMDs remove mechanical drive parts. This helps reduce emissions and allows mining operations to scale up efficiently.

With copper demand rising fast and a shortage expected by 2030, tools like the GMD Copilot help boost production as the world shifts to clean energy.

AI Insights in Seconds

The GMD Copilot pulls data from:

  • Technical manuals
  • Site service reports
  • Online monitoring tools

Users can ask questions and receive fast, clear answers that help them take action right away.

Connected to ABB Cloud Services

The tool is built into ABB’s GMD Connect cloud services. This setup improves operations using live data and smarter document reading.

It’s also easy to use. Teams can quickly find any GMD data or technical documents they need.

“By expanding the capabilities of generative AI to include core industrial applications, we are responding to the growing demand for more efficient, responsive solutions in GMD maintenance,” said Carlos Miguez Fernandez, ABB Process Industries global product manager for service, business line gearless mill drives.

“GMD Copilot is the latest in our suite of tools which enhance operational uptime and support our customers in maintaining peak performance across their GMD systems.”

Secure and Multi-Lingual

The platform is secure. Only people working on the project can access the data. No outside access is allowed.

It also supports many languages, making it easier for teams worldwide to use it in their preferred language.
