Mining Safety Focus for December. Australia’s heat is just around the corner and sun exposure in the summertime can be hazardous. It is important to understand the risks of working outside and ways to cope with working in hot conditions on a mine site.

The risks:

  • Damage to skin and eyes.
  • Heat exhaustion / heatstroke
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced concentration
  • Incorrect use of equipment/plant
  • Psychological Stress
  • Solar Ultraviolet Radiation (UVR) is the leading cause of skin cancer.

Coping strategies:

  • Drinking water regularly, limiting alcohol and caffeine, and ensuring intake of electrolytes.
  • Taking breaks where required.
  • Wearing light, breathable and UV-protective clothing. This also includes wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses.
  • Applying sunscreen regularly.
  • Look after your health and well-being by monitoring stress levels, staying connected and seeking support
  • Understand symptoms of heat-related illnesses
  • Look out for self and others and take action if something doesn’t look right.
