WA Launches HyLogger 4 to Boost Mineral Exploration
The Western Australian Government has launched a cutting-edge spectral scanner. The HyLogger 4 will enhance mineral exploration and support the state’s growing resources sector.
Advanced Technology for Core Sample Analysis
Developed by CSIRO, the HyLogger 4 system is the latest advancement in spectral scanning technology. It replaces the long-serving HyLogger 3, which was first introduced in 2009 and processed over 600,000 metres of drill core from more than 2,000 drill holes across the state.
The new system captures high-resolution data from drill core samples, offering faster and more detailed geological analysis. This upgrade will help mining companies and geoscientists improve resource targeting, especially when exploring mineral deposits hidden beneath the surface.
Improved Detection of Mineralisation
While the HyLogger 3 delivered consistent mineralogical data, the HyLogger 4 introduces enhanced analytical power and superior image resolution. These improvements allow for greater detection of mineralisation in undercover geology, improving exploration accuracy and reducing uncertainty in early-stage mining projects.
Supporting WA’s Exploration Industry
Western Australia’s Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael highlighted the importance of the upgrade for the state’s exploration capabilities.
“The WA Government’s investment in geoscience infrastructure is accelerating exploration, creating regional jobs and supporting critical mineral supply chains for the global energy transition,” he said.
The system plays a key role in delivering precompetitive geoscience data, which exploration companies use to plan more efficient programs and reduce commercial risk.
Feeding Global Geoscience Databases
In addition to supporting local exploration, the HyLogger 4 will contribute to the National Virtual Core Library (NVCL). The world’s largest online drill core database managed by Geoscience Australia. The NVCL provides open access to more than 1,600 kilometres of drill core data from across the country.
By continuing to supply high-quality, high-resolution core scan data, the WA Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE) ensures that the global exploration community can access valuable geological information from Western Australia.
A Leap Forward for Mineral Discovery in WA
With the launch of HyLogger 4, WA strengthens its position as a leader in geological research and mineral exploration. The integration of high-resolution spectral scanning supports critical minerals exploration and aligns with the global push toward sustainable resource development.
For exploration companies operating in WA, this innovation marks a new chapter in efficient, data-driven discovery.
