WA Mines and Petroleum Minister Retains Portfolio in Cabinet Reshuffle

Western Australian Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael will continue in his role following the recent WA election.

Michael first took on the Mines and Petroleum portfolio in December 2023. He was initially selected due to its close alignment with his then-role as Ports Minister. Now, as part of a broader Cabinet reshuffle, he will also take on the Finance and Electoral Affairs portfolios. Meanwhile, Stephen Dawson will assume responsibility for the Ports portfolio.

Dawson’s expanded role also includes serving as Minister for Regional Development and Science and Innovation.

As part of the government’s focus on economic diversification, the global energy transition, and job creation, Amber-Jade Sanderson has been appointed to oversee the Energy and Decarbonisation, Manufacturing, and Skills and TAFE portfolios.

WA Premier Roger Cook emphasised that the reshuffle is aimed at building a stronger future for the state, aligning with the Federal Government’s ‘Future Made in Australia’ plan.

“We have a bold vision for the future our state … It is a vision that will deliver a strong, diversified economy by training highly skilled workers to make more things here, build more homes and provide the services every Western Australian should have access to, no matter where they live in this great state,” Cook said.

“In these globally uncertain times, my priority is to make the WA economy more resilient and establishing our state as a renewable energy powerhouse, which will drive our commitment to exit coal fired power generation, help our trading partners to decarbonise and ensure secure and affordable energy.”

“It’s now time for my new Cabinet to get to work, to deliver for Western Australians and to do what’s right for WA.”

The new Cabinet is expected to drive initiatives that strengthen WA’s economic resilience and energy future. This will be done while supporting local manufacturing and workforce development.
